A Brief History
Believed to have originated in concept during slavery—where women were told to wear rags to cover their hairdos while working —the durag has become a symbol of the black community. Used nowadays for both fashion and function, the durags mainstream use was to maintain the style of hair. When waves became popular during the 70s the durag became widely used to achieve this look. During the 90s and 2000s, the durag became a staple wearable in the hip-hop world, pushing them further into mainstream society. While still mainly used for its ability to maintain one's hairstyle, its use in the fashion world has increased with personalities like Solange Knowles and Rihanna rocking them!
